Paul Signac painted this portrait of critic, translator, art dealer, and anarchist activist Félix Fénéon in 1890. It was Fénéon who coined the term “Neo-Impressionism” to describe works by Signac and by Georges Seurat. The kaleidoscopic pinwheel backdrop likely alludes to the aesthetic theory of Charles Henry, whose books on color theory and the “algebra” of visual rhythm Signac had recently illustrated. Signac's undulating “Portrait of Félix” resides at the Museum of Modern Art.
