A recreation of Gee's Bend quilter Lucy T. Pettway's "Housetop and Bricklayer with Bars," circa 1955, decorates this exceptional scarf. The textile is intentionally pictorial; Pettway has realized an imaginary aerial view of the old Pettway plantation, formerly belonging to Joseph Gee.
Born in 1921, Lucy T. Pettway was the fourth of 14 children. She farmed on her family's property and spent the rest of her life primarily farming and quilting. Much like her father's assistant, Lucy was a reliable farmhand, doing work like plowing that the other girls were not allowed to do.
Since the early 20th century, the Quilters of Gee's Bend — a small Black community in Alabama — have created hundreds of patchwork masterpieces. Their imaginative and boundary-pushing work constitutes a crucial achievement in the history of American art.
