In "The Milkmaid" (c. 1657–58), Johannes Vermeer depicted an everyday woman, performing an everyday task, albeit an important one. Through his use of color and light, he gives momentum to her intention and guides us into her world. The painting is currently part of the collection at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
