This scarf recalls a cotton bogolanfini, or mud cloth, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection. Created in the West African nation of Mali during the 19th–20th century, the mud cloth that inspires this scarf is typical of the traditional textiles crafted by Bamana weavers and dyers. In a collaborative process, men weave the cloth and women decorate it using plant extracts and mud.
