Adorned by constellations in the night sky — such as Pegasus and the Zodiac signs — this charming square silk twill scarf evokes a famous 1515 woodblock print by Albrecht Dürer (German, 1471–1528) in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The print features a celestial map of the Northern Hemisphere and is the companion print to Dürer's celestial map of the Southern Hemisphere. His sources for these works were two richly decorated charts of the stars that were made in Nuremberg in 1503.
The tradition of making celestial maps can be traced back to classical antiquity. This fanciful scarf honors that great legacy.
