Commissioned by Pope Julius II in 1512 and meant as an altarpiece for the basilica church of the Benedictine Monastery of San Sisto in Piacenza, Raphael's "The Sistine Madonna" is a wall-breaking experience. The winged angels or putti beneath Mary are famous in their own right and have inspired many a legend. The painting currently belongs to the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden, Germany.
