William Morris was a textile designer as well as a poet, novelist, and social activist who became an advocate for the British Arts and Crafts Movement. He believed that quality design should be available to everyone and had a particular disdain for mainstream manufacturing. In 1861 he established the Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. interior design company, where he set about creating elegant and timeless designs using handmade production techniques.

His designs are easily recognizable with their elegant flowers, leaves, and vines arranged in symmetrical patterns. Much of his inspiration was drawn from nature and the British countryside where he lived.
