Henri Rousseau and his contemporaries were fascinated by the Romani people known in France as bohémiens. French writers and artists had historically linked the Romani to Egypt, which may explain Rousseau’s depiction of a dark-skinned woman sleeping calmly despite the large lion sniffing at her shoulder. Rousseau, a toll collector for the city of Paris, was largely self-taught. “The Sleeping Gypsy” (1897) is housed at the Museum of Modern Art.
